Description

Only ten musicals have received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in the 104-year history of the prestigious awards. These ten masterpieces span the years 1932 to 2020, and provide fora compelling look at the development of the musical-theatre genre.

In order to provide as much in-depth exploration as possible, the course has been offered in two parts with each covering five musicals. Participation in Part 1 is not a requirement for Part 2.

Part 2 will focus on Sunday in the Park with George, Rent, Next to Normal, Hamilton, and A Strange Loop.

Facilitator: Lois Kivesto

A University of Toronto music graduate (viola), Lois Kivesto received a Ph.D. in theatre from New York University, with a dissertation on the theatre of James Lapine. Her essay “Comedy Tonight!” is published in Stephen Sondheim: A Casebook, part of the Garland Reference Library of the Humanities. A Toronto-based dramaturge and consultant, Lois is a long-serving Shaw Festival programme essayist, and a frequent lecturer for Stratford Festival and McMaster Stratford Seminar Series.
